Chapter Five
Throughout the remainder of the afternoon, Tyler acclimated to life at the magazine, creating a tight first-draft of a piece Will had suggested in the first morning meeting. He hummed over it, strumming his fingers over his lips. He tried to grab Kate’s attention, to ask her to read it, but she was still wrapped around her computer.
It was nearly two in the afternoon, still an hour before the next meeting, and Tyler wanted someone to read over the piece, before he presented it. He eyed the top floor of the magazine, where he caught the shadow of the top of his father’s head, tilting slightly as he tapped on his computer. But he hesitated before sending the piece. His father was the editor, above all the rest of them, and Tyler had to learn to treat him that way if they were going to have any semblance of a normal relationship outside of the office.
Tyler attached the piece to his email and searched through the contact list, finding Will’s name easily. He tapped the note with tight language, hopeful that his style would attract Will’s attention. Deep in the bubble of his private office, Tyler wondered if Will even thought about his other co-writers. It seemed he was one of the only warm bodies the magazine truly needed.
Hey. I have to admit, seeing you here is quite a shock, Tyler began, considering an emoji but backtracking quickly. I adored some of your pitches this morning. You revealed the strength of a New York-style writing room, compared to the LA writer’s room, and I am impressed.
Tyler squeezed his eyelids together, his brain aching. Was he really going to kiss his ass this way? But he kept on.
In any case, I took your idea about the personification of a New York-style bagel and created a piece about it to pitch at the meeting this afternoon. I hoped you could take a gander at it, let me know if this was in any way a part of your vision. Looking forward to getting to know one another professionally. Tyler.
Before he could halt himself, he stabbed the SEND button and leaned back, sweeping his fingers through his short hair. He could almost feel the physical email being delivered in Will’s inbox. But as he refreshed his page throughout the next 15 minutes, he didn’t receive a single response. His heart quickened with panic and understanding. He’d fucked up. He’d pushed his limits. Will was a top-dog writer, and he was a nothing. And, despite having turned him down the evening before, Tyler hadn’t earned his right to speak with him. In fact, Tyler doubted Will would ever bring up their strange, albeit magical evening together ever. Will would go on sleeping with whichever New York editor suited his fancy that month, and the world would tilt back to normal.
About 10 minutes before the writer’s meeting, a response came. Tyler attacked it immediately, his heart pitter-pattering.
But he was immediately disheartened.
Tyler. Wonderful to hear you’re acclimating well to the magazine.
